Note: The title of this Fantasia, "imitating the harp in the style of Ludovico" refers to the improvisation skills of the harpist Ludovico, not to his instrument (such a nice one by the way: nothing else but open strings...). On the original tablature, below stave 61, there is a note reading: "Desde aqui fasta acerca del final hay algunas falsas ; tañiéndose bien no paracen mal." Which could translate: "From here till near the end, there are a few false notes; well played, they don't sound too bad." General Comments: The first section of the piece (bars 1-53) is quite straightforward once you master the scale patterns. The second section is a bit more tricky: the first part (bars 54-60) is not too difficult however, consisting of slightly modified G, D and C chords positions. The final part (bars 61-73) is a bit more complex to handle correctly: I would suggest to play first the melody on the bass strings alone, and try to keep its rythm pattern in mind when working on the rest, at a slow pace as a start. Tuning: The original piece was written for the vihuela da mano, a Spanish Renaissance instrument of the lute family: the shape is quite similar to our modern guitar, with a smaller size however. There were six sets of double strings, tuned in G: G C F A D g, which corresponds to a F#drop tuning with a capo on the third fret on a modern guitar: E A D F# B e; the use of the capo however is optional. Tempo: Indicated as "Compas Apresurado" which means "Hurried Scales". So play it fast, but not too fast on the first crotchets however, otherwise it will be a bit hard to cope with quavers. Time signature: 4/4, but bars 26, 33-35 & 40-41 are in 3/2. Notation Legend: The note length is indicated above staves, as follows: h: half note / minim q: quarter / crotchet e: 8th / quaver s: 16th / semi-quaver .: dotted note |: beat Those durations correspond to the higher notes, and not to the bass line (whose duration is merely indicated by sustain "=="). I hope it will be useful, but I do know however that it is not completely accurate: that's just an attempt to make things easier... (May 2003) Based on the tab by: MH Arnoult (He seemed to know what he was doing) The_S: I heard this piece whilst listening to the first classical guitar CD I ever got, called Spanish Guitar Music - John Williams Unfortunately, I don't have the sheet music for it, so I don't know exactly how Mudarra wanted it played. What I do know, is that John Williams plays the fast notes toward the start using different strings. This makes the song sound dreamy, like a harp. So I figured out a way to do the same. You will have to stretch a little, but nothing extreme, and the last part is very tricky. Follow the bass notes first, then coordinate the rest. Good luck.
